Women Shoppers Give Chrysler dealers a Pat on the Back

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

The last couple of years have been brutal for all dealers, but it seems that Chrysler dealers, as a group, have had it harder than most.

This pat on the back is for them.

Women-Drivers.com ranked Jeep dealers No. 2 overall in its semi-annual report of Top Auto Brands as rated by women's dealership reviews. That put dealers selling the domestic truck brand just behind No. 1 Mercedes dealers but ahead of Lexus dealers at No. 3 and BMW dealers at No. 4.

What's more, Chrysler brand dealers took the No. 5 spot and Dodge dealers came in at No. 9. The only other domestic brand whose dealers were in the top 10 was Buick at No. 8.

Survey respondents based their scores on their dealership experience during vehicle purchase, while just browsing and having their vehicles serviced. Dealerships were rated and scored in each category and given an overall score.

Anne Fleming, president of Women-Drivers.com, says more than half of women new-car buyers visit three or more dealerships during the process. A woman's browsing experience determines where she will buy, she adds.

"No one captures the browsing information; even in CSI, browsing isn't scored," Fleming says. "If she has a great browsing experience, she's going to come back. If she doesn't, she's gone."

Fleming says Women-Drivers.com attracts 100,000 unique visitors a month.

Chrysler's product plan: Tweaks, then Tidal Wave

Chrysler Group's product renaissance is a drama in two acts.

First, the company is breathing new life into its existing lineup. Highlights include the redesigned 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which the automaker started shipping to dealerships in early July, and the re-engineered and restyled Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger rear-drive sedans, both coming in the first quarter of 2011.

Altogether, Chrysler says it is revising 16 vehicles starting this year. Most were in the pipeline before the automaker emerged from bankruptcy under Fiat management in June 2009.

The critical second phase starts at the end of this year when the Fiat 500 minicar arrives, followed by a wave of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles based on Fiat platforms.

Chrysler's strength lies in large cars, pickups, minivans and Jeeps. CEO Sergio Marchionne has said those vehicles will remain the core of Chrysler's business. But the company's complete revival depends largely on smaller, more fuel-efficient Fiat-based vehicles.

The Grand Cherokee was the first vehicle to get Chrysler's Pentastar V-6 engine, developed before Fiat assumed management control. Eventually, the Pentastar engine family will replace seven V-6 engines in Chrysler vehicles, dramatically simplifying the powertrain picture.

The Fiat 500 will be the first North American car in the Chrysler-Fiat stable to get the 1.4-liter FIRE engine. The engine comes with MultiAir, a system that boosts fuel economy and performance.

MultiAir eventually can be deployed across most of Chrysler's engine families, including the 1.8-, 2.0- and 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines produced in Dundee, Mich.

A dual-clutch transmission developed by Fiat will boost fuel efficiency in Chrysler's front-drive vehicles. A new eight-speed automatic, developed by ZF Friedrichshafen AG, will help make Chrysler's rear-drive cars and SUVs more efficient and refined.

With Fiat's Compact and slightly wider Compact Wide platforms and new powertrains, Chrysler at last should have competitive small and mid-sized vehicles.

The Chrysler Eco-Voyager Concept

Friday, July 9, 2010

The Chrysler ecoVoyager Concept is a four-door, four-passenger vehicle that is simultaneously sleek, futuristic, and distinctively American. Its one-box design - and the absence of a traditional powertrain setup - allowed designers to make uniquely efficient use of the cabin's parameters. The ecoVoyager also mates an advanced lithium-ion battery pack to an advanced hydrogen fuel cell, resulting in a vehicle with a range of more than 300 miles that emits nothing from the tailpipe but water vapor.
